Courses

Equip the students with conversation, reading, writing, and comprehension skills in Japanese. Basic Japanese grammatical forms, daily conversation, with emphasis on the Hiragana writing system.

Focus on the Progressive Tense (Te-form), dictionary forms of verbs, adjectives and comparatives-superlatives in Japanese. Introduction to the Katakana writing system and 100 Kanji (ideograms).

Complex sentence structures; if-clauses, time expressions (sentences with when), and plain versus polite style Japanese. Reading and writing 100 new Kanji.
Prerequisites: JP 101 and 102 or consent of the instructor.

Focus on complex sentence structures. Introduction to active and passive voices, expressions of benefactive acts (giving and receiving acts). Reading and writing 100 new Kanji.
Prerequisite: JP 201 or the consent of  instructor.

More advanced grammar forms and their usages. Japanese expressions; conversations and reading material in Japanese. Introduction of 190 new reading Kanji and 150 new writing Kanji.                
Prerequisite: Consent of the instructor.

Humble Form and Honorific Form (KEIGO). Practice in conversation and reading material. Introduction of 105 new Teaching of the third phase of Intermediate Japanese. The use of the reading Kanji and 125 new writing Kanji.                             
Prerequisite: Consent of the instructor.

Advanced level conversations and reading materials dealing with topics in social sciences. Introduction of 80 new reading Kanji and 100 new writing Kanji.                                           
Prerequisite: Consent of the instructor.

Advanced Japanese at a deeper level. Advances level conversations and reading materials dealing with topics in natural sciences and technical subjects. Introduction of 80 new reading Kanji and 100 new writing Kanji.                                         
Prerequisite: Consent of the instructor.

Techniques of translation from Japanese literature into Turkish. Translating and providing translational analysis of different literary texts such as poetry, short story, literary criticsm from contemporary Japanese authors. Comparative study on translated texts and methods of solving literary translation problems.
Prerequisite: Consent of the instructor.

Techniques of translation of texts from diverse areas from Japanese into Turkish.
Translational analysis of texts covering various fields such as economy, politics, art and translation theory with related translation exercises. Further enhancement of translation skills on current issues, selected from various Japanese magazines and newspapers. Comparative study on translated texts. Problems of terminology in translation.
Prerequisite: Consent of the instructor.

An introduction to Classical Japanese for students who have completed their formal study of modern standard Japanese. Lectures and exercises on the phonology and grammar of Early Middle Japanese of the Heian period. Focus on how to read, translate and interpret literary works such as Genji Monogatari or other similar texts of Heian period.
